Fit Lifestyle: What should you eat?

Today I want to talk about food - I get a lot of questions about what I eat, how often I eat and how many calories a day I eat so I wanted to address that.

What to EAT?
I actually don't know the specific number of calories I eat per day because I follow a diet that is constructed around portion size and weight, not number of calories. Often, calorie counts on foods are at best an estimate of that actual macro nutrient content of the food, and the actual number of calories (or as I like to think of it "energy") cannot be accurately determined! For example a "banana has 100 calories" but not all bananas are created equal! Some are bigger, longer, riper, from a different region, ect... all which could effect their calorie, vitamin, sugar, or fiber content.

 So, to answer the question of "How many calories do I eat per day?" I have to say, I don't know! And, it varies! I know if I am not seeing the fat loss I want I will slightly decrease my food intake, usually from carbs, and see what happens in a couple weeks. Same goes for muscle building, I will increase calories in my post-workout meal and maybe add a slow-digesting protein, like a steak salad or a casein protein shake to my meal plan right before bed. After making sure all your food choices are CLEAN, and beneficial for your body, personal diet largely depends on the specific person! Everyone needs to find their own balance and if I eat 1500 calories in a given day that doesn't necessarily mean you should too.

That being said, here's a typical day of my diet and training:
6am - first thing in the morning take a fat burner before 1 hr of cardio (varies)

8am - Meal #1 oatmeal, egg whites, flax oil

10:30am - Meal #2 a serving a fish, veggies, and sweet potato

1pm - Meal #3 a serving of chicken on spinach greens with balsamic & olive oil
1/2 serving of fruit


3pm - Meal #4 1 scoop of protein powder, 2 rice cakes and coconut oil

4pm - Evening lifting session. I usually hit legs 2-3 times a week and shoulders/chest, back/biceps/triceps the other days. I do abs and calves twice a week too.

6:30pm - Meal #5 Right after training (I eat in the car on the way home from the gym!) I eat a serving of ground turkey, whole wheat pasta, olive oil and green beans
9pm - Meal #5 a serving of flank steak and sweet potato salad greens with balsamic and olive oil

10pm - Bedtime! Rest and recovery :)


You may be wondering, "What is a 'serving of ___?" Well for proteins, this is anywhere from 3-6oz for women. And like I said, it varies for me! If you don't have a food scale, it's about a palm size. For vegetables, portion size is basically unlimited. 
Be sure to eat your veggies!
Veggies aren't something that contain a lot of calories, carbs, or sugars; unless we're talking starchy/sugary veggies like potato, sweet potato, corn, or peas. Don't go crazy with these. About half a sweet potato should do it, and the other veggies have portion size given on their packaging (ie: 1/2 cup or 2/3 cup). For fats and oils, 3 tablespoons of healthy fats (olive, flax or coconut oil) should be your max (as a female, men may need more).

You may also be wondering, "What foods are considered "clean" or contest-prep approved?" This is by no means an exhaustive list, but here's an example of "clean eating" foods:
  • almond milk
  • egg substitutes
  • skinless/boneless chicken breasts
  • tilapia fillets
  • tuna in water
  • salmon fillets
  • balsamic vinegar
  • bran cereal
  • plain oats, cream of wheat
  • brown rice, couscous
  • dried beans (black, kidney, etc)
  • peanut butter, almond butter, walnut butter
  • mixed raw nuts (almonds, walnuts, etc)
  • extra virgin olive oil spray
  • raisins
  • bananas
  • avocados
  • blueberries
  • strawberries
  • grapes
  • apples
  • oranges
  • prunes
  • spinach
  • peas
  • broccoli
  • asparagus
  • mushrooms
  • peppers
  • tomatoes
  • onions
  • carrots
  • sweet potatoes
  • green tea

Purely Indulgent

Good evening all~
Lookie what I found in the comments on one of my long-time fave bloggies, Oh She Glows .... another like minded chicka! Angie started a discussion on our "favorite quotes" and this one caught my eye immediately:

Hmmmm, seems like a lot of girls struggle with this same issue: too much planning! My friend Leana told me she does it too, and she hates it! Why do we do it if we hate it? I hold that it's natural for women to be overly concerned and we have to actively fight the tendency to over-think and over-plan our lives.

Back to planning though: there's definitely a fine line between being spending enough time planning to be well prepared and being a frazzled wreck from excessive worrying, planning, re-planning, and then ending up no better off than when you started. Talk about a cruel curse of womanhood! Ooof.

So there's that little nugget... what I really got on to blog about are the things that I found truly irresistible, indulgent, and so enjoyable is utterly indescribable this week... Mmmm mmm!!

No matter what, there are 3 things that never fail to make me happy:
  1. Clothes ...... Two words: Retail therapy, not so cheap sometimes $$ (ok so never)
  2. Food .... I love cooking and food blogs! But sometimes it's not such a health comfort. Must resist the sweets!
  3. Music .... Play on play on! This one has never gotten me into trouble :)

~ Clothes:
We will begin with clothes and the pleasures I've found on el Internet this week. Oooo yes my friends, I have bad case of cyber lust with some serious clothes cravings! Luckily such cravings rarely end in kitchen raids or ruining my contest diet so I see no reason not to INDULGE! (As long as it's window shopping)

I love dresses <3 They make you look so good and people always compliment my "cute outfit" when I wear one, little do they know that 9 times out of 10 the reason I wore a dress is because I am terrible at making cute outfits and/or was running late and didn't want to put on more than one piece of clothing! Easy and stylish? Win Win.

~ Food:

In my defense, I did have a good reason to google decadent deserts! I am putting together goodie bags to give to my friends and fellow Bikini competitors backstage after the show. TRUST me, they'll be ecstatic.

Now the rest of these recipes have no defense. They just looked awesome!
I've shared my love for pumpkin on my blog before, but in case you missed it: I have a huge thing for pumpkin, I just love it! It's good for you and tastes like heaven. What's not to love? I'm the crazy chick buying 10 cans of Libby's Pure Pumpkin as soon as it hits SALE at Safeway. Gotta stock up!

I sometimes forget the power of music to change my mood, but luckily today I remembered just I was having a seriously tough time getting into my evening lifting sesh. I was doing that whole worrying about the future thing and totally zapping my energy... until I broke out my tune-age!

My energy went up about 500% as soon as I started jammin' out :)


I must have really been feelin' Adam Lavine today, because this song had me literally dancing up the stair stepper...

Embracing The Unknown


I needed to take a step back...
I needed to remember to be kind to myself...
I needed to quit focusing on the what if, the why not, and the maybe... 

I NEEDED to read this: Fitnessista's Cutting Some Slack blog post. 

Thank you Gina for saying what I wish I'd told myself a long time ago.

 ~ A little history: I have been a "worrier" since high school, ever since my parents decided it would be OK to have me switch from homeschooling to public schooling - mostly so I could play sports, and to get access to college scholarships. I felt so lucky! I'd never thought I'd enter the glorious, exciting social world of high school...  I told myself I would "prove to my parents that they made the right decision" and "make them proud." And I did. I was Vice-President of my class, National Honor Society, Mathletes, Varsity Basketball, Cross Country (awarded 'Most Improved Runner) and Track, Prom Princess, Salutatorian, and entered college on a full ride academic scholarship. AND I loved high school! I was popular with tons of friends and my teachers loved me; I totally rocked high school. .... Sounds all great right? Well little did I know I was setting myself up to always worry about "measuring up to expectations." My parents struggled with their marriage when I was younger. I always knew they were trying to make it work (which they did! Still together now), and that they loved us dearly... but almost every week I got the talk about what would happen if they got divorced. I couldn't do anything but watch. It made me feel sick. I wanted to help, but how? I knew how! Be the "perfect child" and then my family could be the "perfect family".... I did the exact same thing as Gina did, be *the best* ALL. THE. TIME. Little did I know the only one I who was judging my accomplishments was me. Gina's post was heaven-sent, she gets it... Oh-my-gosh she knows my pain!... 

 ~ Flash forward to this week: I have been killing myself in the gym lately, eating on plan, taking all my supplements and being as vigilant as possible with all my training... but I was putting WAY too much pressure on myself at work and and with planning for school. I’ll be a senior in Mechanical Engineering in the Fall, and I was stressing about my senior design project (Since then, God has TOTALLY answered my prayers about! Hallelujah).

Far too often I am my own wost enemy by holding negative attitudes about my accomplishments and it steals my joy.  Often I need an outside viewpoint to remind me to live in the present, cut myself some slack, and let God handle it. Because He already is anyways, just trust Him! Worrying NEVER made anything better, or work out any faster.

How often do we forget this simple idea?

Recently I've been having so much more peace now that I am trusting God's plans without trying to be "one step ahead" all the time. It really has been the "blissful" life this very blog is named after :) I am full of joy today and back to appreciating the positive and enjoying the little things!! Everything just feels awesome when you give yourself permission to not have all the answers.

My last post announced some of the big plans I have for my future: plans for CreationFest, Bombshell camp, and the Olympia Expo. Life IS a lot less "unknown" than it was a week ago, but I still have flights to buy, hotels to book and bags to pack. There's still much left "unknown" though, and guess what? There ALWAYS will be! In order to have any stitch of sanity left at the end of the day YOU MUST LEARN TO EMBRACE THE UNKNOWN.



After all, aren't some of the funnest things the surprises? Looking forward to what could happen is actually waaayyy better than knowing what will happen. Imagine if you knew everything that was going to happen to you, for the rest of your life. What would there be to live for then? You'd miss out on all the joy of surprise parties, surprise endings in movies, not knowing what you're getting for Christmas, the excitement of a first kiss, finding out you won that contest you entered, running into an old friend by chance, or got more back on your tax return than you thought... ha-ha. Seeing a the future is over-rated in my opinion!



Angela, over at Oh She Glows, wrote a great post on Tips to Live In the Present that is such a good read. Like the Fitnessista, I always know I can turn to Oh She Glows for positive encouragement and helpful advice. Thank you Ange! Maybe you've been stuck in a stress-rut too, or maybe you're just having a tough day. Let me encourage you that you are not alone in your burdens... God will ALWAYS be with you if you ask Him, and He never takes a day off.


Find daily encouragement at GreatDay.com, or start your day by reading a couple Bible verses... that's what I do! It sets such a peaceful, positive tone to the day :)

A verse I've been really taking to heart lately is Philippians 4:11-13, it reminds me that no matter what I'm going through or about to face (competition dieting, a tight budget, busy schedule, unknown future) I know the secret of contentment found in Jesus's love and promises.
" I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through Him who gives me strength. "

Money always seems to be a big stress for college kids, and for me it's no different! Competition and travel are both really expensive, so beyond the regular school expenses I'm kinda pushing it.. however, my Verse of the Day Bible app on my phone reminded me God's blessing my moneys too :)

Proverbs 3:9-10..."Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine."
I'll take some 'plenty' and wine bursting! Ha-ha. FIRST I must honor God with my money though, so I will continue to tithe with joy at church and give money to those in need as God calls me to. I am His vessel here to accomplish His will, and then I am a college kid, Bikini competitor, and PSNS engineer.

Take away points?
  • Be YOU. Let God be God.
    • Only God can plan your path. Just walk the steps.  
  • Be Oblivious!
    • Don't try to control the future, know the future, or worry about the future. Find joy in the unknown, it's more exciting!
  • Be Present. And live in the present with Purpose.
    • As Christians, our purpose here on earth is to lead other's to the joy found in Christ so they can live with purpose, peace, and fulfillment here on earth too; and live for eternity with God in Heaven. Do God's work and He'll give you wine :D

Morning Bliss

Okay,
So I definitely made some changes recently.

In the last month I have finished my Junior year of school (with a 3.95 GPA this semester - whoop whoop!!, moved to Washington, starting an internship at the Navy Shipyard (PSNS), and starting training and dieting under Bombshell Fitness to compete in NPC Bikini shows (first one as a Bombshell is in less than 2 months!) 

I really had to adjust my daily schedule when I moved to Washington. Although I just got here on Saturday, I feel I have already gotten into the groove of things and I have a sustainable, enjoyable, and effective morning routine that sets me up for a busy day of work. You have no idea how fast the time flies from getting off work at 4:10pm to 9pm (when my head should be hitting the pillow to get enough sleep to do it all over again!) I still have some kinks to work out with stream-lining my evening hours, but I have mastered my morning!

Good morning sunshine!

I strongly believe it is important to start each day with purpose. If you don't get up and get going with intention, even on those lazy days, relaxation or vacation days, or raining days - which I'll be seeing alot of - I have learned from experience that you'll find yourself feeling tired, dull, and like you wasted a day.

If you don't have a plan, you plan to fail.


Here's how I start my day off right,
1) 3:50 am - Alarm goes off
2) 4:00 am - Dressed/Brush teeth/Grab packed backpack and food cooler
3) 4:15 am - Out the Door/ Drive to Ferry

4) 4:30 am - Ferry to PSNS/ check personal email on phone/ listen to music
5) 5:00 am - Walk to Gym/ Listen to Bible reading plan <-- The most important part of my morning as far as determining myt attitude for the rest of the day!

6) 5:15am = Gym time!! - 1 hour of cardio/FOOD!!!/Shower
7) 7:00 am - Walk to work

8) 7:10am  - Start my day's Work of learning and helping at my PSNS internship


Boom: It's "My 8 before 8" ha-ha. My morning is definitely full, but it starts me off right and it's well planned, fullfilling, and empowering.  All before 8am!
